Hillerich & Bradsby pre-model bat was used by Fonseca during the 1931 season as a member of the Chicago White Sox. The bat shows excellent use with numerous ball marks and light stitch marks visible on the right and left barrel surfaces. Several cleat marks are also present. The handle has a minor crack near the knob. Nothing written or stamped into either end of the bat.
An important feature of this bat is that it was returned to the H&B factory in 1931, had the left side of the barrel planed and then an H&B employee (likely Henry Morrow) wrote the information on the barrel in grease pencil. Still legible after all these years, the side writing appears to say “L A Fonseca 4-27-31 Chicago AM Lea”. Side writing is considered to be the highest of provenance as it ties the bat directly to the player.
