Old Hickory model J143M was used early in the 2016 season. It is MLB Authenticated (HZ849912). It was cracked on May 6, 2016 in the bottom of the 7th inning. The bat shows outstanding use. Many ball marks, seam impressions, and ink transfers are visible on the right, left, and back barrel surfaces. Numerous cleat marks are also present. The handle has a moderate coat of pine tar and it is cracked with a minor sliver missing that measures approximately 4″ in length by 1/8″ wide. The missing sliver is not visible when displayed. The lower 9″ of the handle has a criss-cross tape application for grip that appears to have possibly been re-taped at some point during the lifespan of the bat. The knob has Diaz’s original #73 that he wore in spring training scribbled out and his #36 is written in black. The barrel end has the 7 scribbled out and his 36 has been added.
Based on the first available confirmed use (April 15, 2016) and the date it was cracked (May 6, 2016), there’s a very good chance the bat was used by Diaz to hit his 3rd (April 24th), 4th (April 27th), and 5th (May 2nd) career home runs.
The April 24th HR is confirmed. The image included in the photo set shows Diaz congratulating Gyorko after Gyorko hit a HR in the 6th inning. In Diaz’s next at-bat right after the Gyorko HR, Diaz hits his 3rd career HR on the 2nd pitch. The first pitch he took and it was a strike.
The April 27th HR is not confirmed. However, all of the images from April 27th shown on USA Today Sports Images all show this bat in use.
The May 2nd HR is not confirmed. I do know he was using this bat for his single pitch foul out AB in the Bottom of the 4th inning, but he wasn’t using this bat for his 7th inning ground out.
The bat is signed in silver and he has added his #36 as well as a “GAME USED ROOKIE SEASON 2016 ALL STAR” inscription.
