Hillerich & Bradsby model K55 was used by Charlie James with the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1964 season. The bat shows excellent use with a handle crack. The bat’s labeling period is 1961-64, further confirmed by his #23 on both the knob and barrel end. However, the style of Powerized is the 1964-72 variety which dates the bat specifically to the 1964 season when the Cardinals reached the World Series against the New York Yankees, which the Cardinals won 4 games to 3. James was 0-3 in the series.

Numerous ball marks and light seam impressions are visible on the right, left, and back barrel surfaces. Single cleat mark is present on the back. Some slight grain swelling and separation.

The handle has no traces of pine tar, tape, or scoring. It is cracked at the mid-handle and the crack runs approximately 12″ up into the center label. Charlie’s #23 is written on both ends in black marker. The marking on the barrel end is significantly worn away. The weight is also marked on the knob in pencil. This was likely a factory request.

Charlie James’ only World Series appearance was with the Cardinals in 1964. He was a career .255 hitter, 29 HRs, 172 RBI.
